Contra is a run-and-gun action retro game in which the player controls one of two armed military commandos named Bill ‘Mad Dog’ Rizer and Lance ‘Scorpion’ Bean.
They are to neutralize a terrorist group called Red Falcon Organization.
The player character comes armed with a gun that can shoot infinitely. Different levels, new weapons with new abilities that shoot different projectiles as they progress.
At first, three lives, represented by medals, are given. However, by defeating the enemies, going through the obstacles, and the players can earn extra lives.
Much of the game’s popularity came from its two-player simultaneous co-operative gameplay, which at the time was uncommon in video games. Another aspect of the game’s huge success was its motif and inspiration. The main inspiration was from a combination of three hugely popular action films: Commando, Rambo and Aliens. For instance, many of the Red Falcon’s forces are from the Aliens franchise, facehuggers and ovomorphs for example. In addition to that, Bill Rizer’s and Lance Bean’s characters’ physical designs were based on Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, respectively. The two box-office guarantee movie stars at the time.
